Magabox Elite X2 live TV VOD Android TV Box Review

To begin with, let’s dive right into this. Before anything else, let’s talk about the MagaBox Elite X2 TV Box, the latest release from MagaBox. Therefore, let’s unpack everything it offers, all the features it brings, and ultimately whether it’s worth your money.

What Comes in the Box?

First of all, when you unbox the MagaBox Elite X2, you’ll immediately notice the following items:

  • To start with, the TV box itself.
  • In addition, an infrared remote.
  • Moreover, an HDMI cable.
  • Furthermore, a 5V 2A DC power adapter.
  • Finally, a user manual.

Because of its unique design, the device really stands out. On one hand, the sides and base use metal, providing a premium feel. On the other hand, the top is plastic. Additionally, the front features an LED display. Moreover, the base includes ventilation holes and rubber feet, which ensure stability and cooling.

  • In addition, a gigabit LAN port.
  • Moreover, an optical audio output.
  • Furthermore, a reset button and a DC power socket.
  • Finally, an external antenna connector.

Additionally, on the side, you’ll find:

  • Two USB 2.0 ports.
  • Moreover, one USB 1.0 port.

Launcher and Setup

Next, let’s power it on. As soon as you do, you’ll see the MagaBox animation. Subsequently, the home screen appears, showcasing a simple launcher. While the top section displays “Home” and “Apps,” the bottom shortcut bar allows quick access.

In addition to these, the launcher provides:

  • For one thing, system settings.
  • Moreover, a file browser.
  • Additionally, one-click memory cleanup.
  • Also, internet speed tests.
  • Finally, quick app uninstall options.

However, pairing the Bluetooth remote isn’t intuitive. Because the manual doesn’t include instructions, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Firstly, press the left and right buttons on the direction pad for three seconds.
  2. Then, watch for the power LED to blink.
  3. Afterward, navigate to Bluetooth settings and pair the remote.

MagaBox Elite X2 Streaming Apps and Features

Above all, this device is designed for streaming. Although it supports live TV channels and video-on-demand (VOD) movies, none of these apps come preinstalled. In other words, you’ll need to install everything yourself.

Available Apps

After installing the APK app store, you’ll gain access to the following:

  • Firstly, a live TV app with 5,002 channels worldwide.
  • Moreover, a VOD app with 22,732 movies and 1,640 TV series.
  • Additionally, a Replay app that records up to one week of content for 54 channels.
  • Finally, MGTV, an alternative app with 5,081 international channels.

Incidentally, you can check out a live demo of these apps on my Odysee channel, TV Box Stop. Similarly, you can purchase this box for $259 from the link in the description. Alternatively, U.S. buyers can get it for $200 by emailing me at tvboxstop@gmail.com.

Firmware and Display Features

In terms of software, the MagaBox Elite X2 runs on Android 12 TV OS. Not only does the firmware include developer options, but it also supports:

  • To begin with, display resolutions up to 4K 2160p at 60 Hz.
  • Additionally, HDR formats like HDR10 and HLG (though not Dolby Vision or HDR10+).
  • Moreover, auto HDR and frame rate switching.
  • Furthermore, HDMI CEC functionality.
  • Finally, screen rotation for portrait and force landscape modes.

In addition to these, its audio features support surround sound passthrough, including formats like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS Virtual X. However, it doesn’t support DTS-HD MA, DTS X, or Dolby TrueHD.

MagaBox Elite X2 System and Hardware Information

Furthermore, let’s talk hardware. Specifically, here’s the breakdown:

  • First, the chipset is Allwinner H313/616.
  • Second, the CPU is a quad-core Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz (32-bit mode).
  • Third, the GPU is Mali G31 with OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.1.
  • Additionally, it offers 4GB DDR4 RAM and 32GB internal storage.
  • Moreover, it includes dual-band Wi-Fi 6 AX and gigabit Ethernet.
  • Finally, Bluetooth is supported in version 5.0.

On the downside, it lacks an AV1 decoder and built-in surround sound decoders. Moreover, idle temperatures reach up to 57°C.

Streaming and Video Playback

When it comes to streaming, this box has limitations. For example, it only supports Widevine L3 DRM. Consequently, HDCP protection is absent, restricting Netflix playback to 480p. Moreover, YouTube is limited to 1080p without HDR.

Although HDR10 works fine, HLG and Dolby Vision revert to HDR10. Furthermore, AV1 videos fail to play entirely.

Gaming and Performance

Likewise, gaming isn’t a strong suit for the MagaBox Elite X2. Because the Allwinner chipset isn’t powerful enough, demanding games are a challenge. However, it’s the first box I’ve tested that works with the GameSir G8+ controller.

Benchmark Scores

To illustrate performance:

  • RAM speed: 2,963 MB/s.
  • Storage speeds: Read at 113 MB/s, write at 77 MB/s.
  • Wi-Fi and LAN: 5 GHz at 170 Mbps, 2.4 GHz at 41 Mbps, LAN at 315 Mbps.
  • CPU: Geekbench 5 scores – 110 (single-core) and 380 (multi-core).
  • GPU: 3DMark Wildlife score of 126 (0.76 fps average).
  • Antutu Benchmark: Version 8 score of 70,728.

Consequently, it ranks 120th on my performance chart with a 3/5-star rating.

Final Thoughts

To sum up, the MagaBox Elite X2 TV Box offers a decent streaming experience. While the hardware resembles other Allwinner models, its streaming apps work well. Nevertheless, the MGTV app needs updates. Although gaming and 4K playback are weak points, the audio passthrough and dual-band Wi-Fi are definite positives.
